Add course content and publish

Content items are the material a learner works through — videos, articles, files, and links. Publishing is what turns a draft course into one learners can enrol in.

Required role: Administrator.

The course must already exist. It cannot be published until it has at least one content item, so add content first.

  1. Go to Learning → Course Library and open the course.
  2. Open the Content tab.
  3. Add your content items.
  4. Return to the course and select Publish.
  5. Confirm.

Optional items change what completion means

Section titled “Optional items change what completion means”

A content item can be marked optional. Optional items appear in the outline but do not have to be finished for the learner to complete the course.

Use that deliberately. Marking supporting reading optional keeps completion achievable; marking core material optional means people can complete a course without seeing it.

Example: HC Corp UK Ltd marks background reading optional on a compliance course and leaves the policy itself required, so completion means what the company needs it to mean.

Publish makes the course enrollable. Humavera blocks publishing while the course has no content and tells you why — add at least one item and the action becomes available.

Example: an HC Corp UK Ltd course with a title, description, and no content cannot be published. Learners would enrol into an empty course.

Archive removes a course from the active catalogue without deleting it. Existing completion history is preserved.

Prefer archiving for any course people have taken. A deleted course takes its history with it, and someone will eventually ask what training an employee has done.

The course names an Instructor, and that is who learners see as responsible for it. The learner-facing player tells a learner when a course has no content yet, naming the instructor as the person who has not added it.

Once published, the course appears in the catalogue and learners can enrol themselves or be assigned to it. Completion awards any skills or competencies configured as grants, and issues a certificate if the course nominates an active certification template.
