Import skills from the global library

What this achieves

The global library is a curated catalogue of industry-standard skills maintained centrally rather than by your organization. Importing copies the ones you choose into your own library, where they behave like any skill you wrote yourself.

Required role: Administrator or Manager.

Steps

Go to Skills & Competencies → Global Library.
Filter by Region, Industry, or Category, or search.
Switch on Available in my language if you need entries in your own language.
Select the skills you want.
Select Import Selected.

Filters

Option	Description
Region	Narrow to skills relevant to a region.
Industry	Narrow to an industry’s standard skills.
Category	Narrow to a category of skill.
Available in my language	Show only entries available in your language.

Filter by industry before browsing. The catalogue spans industries, and an unfiltered list is long enough that people give up rather than import.

Example: HC Corp UK Ltd filters to its own industry and the United Kingdom, then imports the base set, rather than reading the whole catalogue.

Importing twice is safe

Import skips anything already in your library rather than creating a duplicate, and reports how many were imported and how many were skipped.

That makes it safe to run again later when the catalogue has grown, and safe when two administrators import overlapping selections.

Example: importing a set that overlaps what HC Corp UK Ltd already holds adds only the new entries and reports the rest as skipped.

An imported skill is yours

Once imported, a skill sits in your library like any other. You can edit it, add your own synonyms and tags, attach it to job profiles, and grant it from courses. It is a copy, not a live link to the catalogue.

That means your edits are safe from central changes — and equally, later improvements to the catalogue entry do not reach the copy you already hold.

If the catalogue is empty

The global library may not be populated yet, and the screen says so plainly when it is not. That is a platform-side matter rather than something to configure in your workspace.

Import as a starting point, not a finished library

An imported set gives you defensible, industry-recognised terms quickly. It will not contain the capabilities that are specific to your company — internal tooling, your own processes, the things nobody outside would name.

Expect to import a base and then add your own. Most organizations end with both.

What happens next

Imported skills appear in your skill library immediately and can be edited there. Review their categories and add the synonyms your people actually use, since a catalogue entry carries the standard name rather than yours. From there they behave like any skill: required by job profiles, granted by courses, assessed on individuals.
