Endorse a colleague's skill
What this achieves
Section titled “What this achieves”An endorsement is a colleague’s vouching for a skill someone holds, recorded at a level with a comment. It is a peer signal rather than a formal evaluation, and it does not go through the assessment queue.
Required role: Any signed-in user.
- Open the colleague’s skill you want to endorse.
- Choose the Endorsed Level.
- Write a Comment.
- Select Submit Endorsement.
Endorsement is not assessment
Section titled “Endorsement is not assessment”The two are separate mechanisms and it is worth knowing which you are looking at.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Endorsement | Given freely by a colleague. Carries a level and a comment. No request, no due date, no queue. |
| Assessment | Requested from a specific assessor. Appears in their pending list with a due date, shows the previous level, and is submitted as a formal record. |
An endorsement is somebody choosing to say something. An assessment is somebody being asked to make a judgement.
Example: at HC Corp UK Ltd, a colleague who worked alongside James Whitfield endorses the skill they saw him use. Olivia Bennett, as his manager, completes a requested assessment of the same skill. Both are on record and they are different kinds of statement.
Write the comment for a reader
Section titled “Write the comment for a reader”The comment asks you to share your observation. An endorsement without one is a number from a person who did not say why, and it carries correspondingly little weight in any later conversation.
Example: naming the piece of work you saw them do supports the endorsement. Selecting a level and leaving the comment empty does not.
Endorse what you have seen
Section titled “Endorse what you have seen”Endorse at the level you genuinely observed, not the level you think would be encouraging. Endorsements sit alongside assessments in how a person’s capability is described, and inflated ones make the whole picture less useful — including to the person receiving them, who may be staffed on work they are not ready for.
What happens next
Section titled “What happens next”The endorsement is recorded against that person’s skill and contributes to how their capability is described, alongside their assessments and completed learning. It is one signal among several rather than a rating in its own right, and it does not by itself change what gap analysis reports against a role’s requirements.
