Request a transfer or role change
What this achieves
Section titled “What this achieves”A mobility request is how a permanent move is actually made. It names where you want to go, collects the approvals the move needs, and carries the effective date the change takes.
Required role: Any signed-in user.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Applying to an opportunity is not the same as requesting a move. An accepted application for a full role records the decision; the request is what changes your position and reporting line.
- Go to Opportunities → Requests.
- Select New Request.
- Choose the Type.
- Choose the target, which depends on the type you picked.
- Enter the Reason.
- Select Submit request.
Request type
Section titled “Request type”| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Transfer | A move to a different department, with an optional target position. |
| Secondment | A temporary placement, requested rather than arranged from an opportunity. |
| Role Change | A change of role, targeted either at a position directly or at a posted opportunity. |
Choosing the target
Section titled “Choosing the target”Pick the most specific target you can. The panel offers three levels, and what you choose decides how much is known about where you are going.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Target opportunity | A posted opportunity you are applying to. Its department and position are applied automatically. |
| Target position | A specific position. Choose the department first, then the position within it. |
| Target department | A general move into a department, with no position named. |
For a role change, you are asked how you want to target it — Target a position directly or Apply to a specific opportunity — before you choose.
Example: James Whitfield requests a role change at HC Corp UK Ltd against a posted engineering opportunity. The department and position come from the opportunity, so there is nothing for him to select and nothing to get wrong.
The reason is read by three approvers
Section titled “The reason is read by three approvers”Reason is required, and the panel asks for the context the approvers should know. Three different people will read it: your current manager, the manager of where you are going, and HR.
Write it for all three. Your current manager is weighing losing you, the target manager is weighing taking you, and HR is checking the move is sound.
Approval routes through three stages
Section titled “Approval routes through three stages”A request does not go to one approver. It moves along a chain, and the request shows which stage it is at.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Pending current manager | Waiting on the manager you report to now. |
| Pending target manager | Waiting on the manager of the department you are moving to. |
| Pending HR | Waiting on HR. |
| Approved | All stages cleared. The move can be completed. |
| Rejected | Declined at one of the stages. |
| Completed | The transfer has been carried out. |
| Cancelled | Withdrawn before completing. |
Your current manager is asked first. That is the difference between requesting a move and applying to an opportunity: applying asks nobody, and moving asks the person you work for now.
Approved is not moved
Section titled “Approved is not moved”A request reaching Approved means the approvals are in. The move is carried out by completing the transfer, which sets the effective date and marks the request completed.
Watch for requests sitting at Approved. Somebody agreed to the move and nobody has made it.
Cancelling your own request
Section titled “Cancelling your own request”Cancel withdraws a request you have raised. Do that rather than letting an abandoned request sit in somebody’s approval queue.
What happens next
Section titled “What happens next”Follow your request on the My Requests tab, which shows its current stage. Once completed, the change is on your employee record with its effective date, and your reporting line, department, and position reflect the new role. Approvers work their side under Pending Approval.
