Run a gig or project assignment

A gig or a project assignment is the record of work you accepted through an internal opportunity while keeping your existing role. This is where you start it, say how it is going, and record what came of it.

Required role: Any signed-in user.

An assignment exists only once your application has been accepted. Until then, follow it under My Applications.

  1. Go to Opportunities → My Gigs.
  2. On the My Gigs tab, find the gig.
  3. Select Start when the work begins.
  4. Select Update Progress, write your Progress notes, and select Save.
  5. When the work is done, select Complete, record the Outcome, and confirm.
OptionDescription
ActiveAssigned and not yet started.
In ProgressStarted.
CompletedFinished, with an outcome recorded.
CancelledEnded without completing, with a reason recorded.

Example: James Whitfield accepts a six-hour-a-week gig supporting Finance at HC Corp UK Ltd. It sits at Active until he starts it, moves to In Progress while he is doing it, and completes with a note on what he delivered.

A gig does not change your position, your department, or who you report to. It is additional work with its own dates and its own weekly hours, and your existing role continues underneath it.

The gig shows its sponsor and its hours per week. Those two facts are what your own manager needs to know, because the hours come out of the week they are planning.

Update Progress asks what is done, what is blocked, and what is next. The notes are visible to the people running the opportunity, which is what stops a gig becoming invisible work that nobody credits.

Update it when something changes rather than on a schedule. A gig with no notes and no completion looks abandoned even when it is not.

Completing asks what you delivered and what was learned. Write it for somebody who was not involved.

This is the record that survives the gig. It is what you point at in a development conversation or a review, so a sentence of substance is worth more than “done”.

Cancelling marks the gig cancelled and asks for a reason, which is optional. The confirmation states that the opportunity itself is not affected — cancelling your assignment does not close or cancel the opportunity it came from.

Projects work the same way and are followed in a different place. Go to Opportunities → My Projects and use the My Projects tab.

OptionDescription
ActiveAssigned and not yet started.
In ProgressUnder way.
CompletedFinished.
CancelledEnded without completing.

A project assignment shows its status, its progress, its dates, and its hours per week, with Open to go to the opportunity behind it. Progress and status on a project are maintained by the people running it rather than by you, so there is nothing here for you to update — this view is where you check where a project stands and what you are committed to.

Both screens carry a second tab — All Gigs and All Projects — listing assignments across the organization with the employee named. Use it to see who is committed to what before adding to somebody’s week.

A completed gig or project stays on your record with its outcome, and the opportunity it came from shows the assignment on its own tab. Neither changes your position or your reporting line at any point. A move that does change those is a secondment or a permanent transfer, and both are handled differently.
